‘The Dhillon experiment’: What new Punjab BJP chief’s appointment signals for party ahead of 2027 polls

The Implications of Dhillon’s Leadership in Punjab BJP Ahead of 2027 Elections

Kewal Dhillon's appointment as the new head of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Punjab reflects a strategic move within the party's political framework. Dr. Kanwalpreet Kaur from DAV College, Chandigarh, noted that Dhillon embodies a specific political profile: he is a Sikh, a Jat, and hails from the influential Malwa region. Despite these advantages, Kaur argues that Dhillon has never been seen as a formidable political force, even during his time with the Congress.

Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, the Punjab Congress chief, criticized the BJP's reliance on leaders from rival parties, posting on X, “The party that is ‘DAYDREAMING’ about forming the government in Punjab cannot find anyone worthy from its own stable to lead the state.” He pointed out that this trend of outsourcing leadership, with Dhillon following Sunil Jakhar, signals a troubling reality for the BJP in Punjab.

Congress MP Manish Tewari echoed Warring's sentiments, highlighting the BJP's struggle to find homegrown leadership by stating, “It is a telling comment of the State of BJP4India in Punjab that they can only find former Congressmen to appoint as State Presidents.” Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also mocked the BJP’s choice, expressing sympathy towards Dhillon while referencing his past electoral failures.

Political Landscape and Strategic Calculations

Prof. Harjeshwar Singh from SGGS College pointed out that Dhillon’s politics are emblematic of a system marked by factionalism and patronage—traits that have led to widespread disillusionment among voters. “The BJP's Punjab unit increasingly resembles a rehabilitation centre for political leftovers,” Singh remarked, critiquing the party's approach to leadership.

Despite the criticism, BJP leaders remain optimistic. Union Minister Ravneet Bittu and MLA Ashwani Sharma praised Dhillon, asserting that his leadership will bode well for the party as it gears up for the 2027 assembly elections. Experts suggest that Dhillon’s Sikh identity and Jat background are essential for the BJP’s strategy, especially given the recent challenges in garnering support from rural Sikh communities.

Congress leader Sukhjinder Randhawa took the opportunity to remind Jakhar of his departure from the Congress, questioning the BJP's reliability as a political refuge. He posted on X, “What about the fact that the BJP has removed you even before you could complete your term?” This highlights the precariousness of political alliances in Punjab.

Dhillon’s Political Journey and Challenges Ahead

Dhillon's trajectory in politics has seen him align closely with former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh. While he once held influence in Barnala, his electoral fortunes have waned, losing key contests to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). His final break from the Congress came when he was denied a ticket for the 2022 elections, leading to his expulsion and subsequent switch to the BJP.

As the BJP attempts to reconstruct its political identity in Punjab post-Akali Dal, Dhillon's past as a businessman—who once brought PepsiCo into India—adds another layer to his profile. However, his history is marred by controversies, including legal issues surrounding his business ventures. This complex background, combined with his dwindling electoral success, raises questions about his ability to unite the party and attract significant support.

Ultimately, while Dhillon's appointment might reflect an effort to connect with Sikh voters, skepticism remains about whether he can bridge the gap between the BJP and rural Punjab. Observers note that the true test will be whether Dhillon can revitalize the party’s standing in a state where it faces significant opposition.
