Kerala's New CM Satheesan Meets Modi for the First Time

In a ceremonial event marked by enthusiasm, Kerala's new Chief Minister, Satheesan, took the oath of office alongside his council of ministers. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar officiated the swearing-in, which attracted a crowd of thousands, including loyal party workers and notable political figures. The cabinet comprises 20 ministers, with 14 making their debut in such roles, two women ministers, and representatives from the Scheduled Caste community.

The Congress party secured 11 positions in the cabinet, while its ally, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), was allocated five portfolios. Other coalition partners, such as various factions of the Kerala Congress, the Revolutionary Socialist Party, and the Communist Marxist Party, also found representation in this diverse assembly. Following a decisive win in the April 9 Assembly elections, the United Democratic Front (UDF) emerged victorious, clinching 102 out of 140 seats, while the Left Democratic Front (LDF) managed 35 and the BJP captured three.

As the new cabinet settles in, portfolio allocations have been confirmed, with Chief Minister Satheesan retaining key departments like Finance, Law, Ports, and Railways. Senior Congress member Ramesh Chennithala will oversee the Home portfolio, while K Muraleedharan is responsible for Health and Medical Education. P K Kunhalikutty will handle Industries, Commerce, and Information Technology. The UDF government has signaled that its focus will be on infrastructure development, job creation, and welfare initiatives in the upcoming months.
