TDP Pushes for Gender Quotas Ahead of 2029 Elections
During a recent gathering, senior leaders of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) made a bold move to advocate for increased female representation in politics. They expressed their intention to “lead by example” rather than waiting for a wider political consensus on the issue. The party has also taken steps to enhance women's roles within its ranks, appointing Nandyal MP Byreddy Shabari as its first woman national general secretary and welcoming Gantyada Sridevi to the politburo in a recent organizational shakeup.
In remarks to party members, TDP leader Lokesh stressed the importance of women's voices in governance, stating,
“I strongly believe that the next era of Indian politics must belong to women.”He noted that with the NDA government's recent passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill, it is crucial for women to step beyond being recipients of welfare and become influential leaders in the political landscape.
TDP national president and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu echoed these sentiments, asserting that the party is committed to “vision-oriented politics.” He pledged to collaborate with the Modi-led NDA government to establish a 33% reservation for women nationwide. As the party gears up for the 2029 elections, both leaders rallied their supporters, urging them to reinforce the TDP's alliance with the NDA in Andhra Pradesh. “The honeymoon period of two years is over,” Lokesh remarked, emphasizing the need to fulfill promises of good governance.
Naidu revealed that the government’s policy framework aims to align with the aspirations of young voters, particularly Gen Z, whose ambitions should shape the direction of Andhra Pradesh over the next twenty years. The Mahanadu event, which took place on May 27 and 28 in a hybrid format, was originally intended as a massive assembly in Nellore but was adapted in light of Prime Minister Modi’s call for fuel conservation amid geopolitical tensions.
Commemorating the birth anniversary of TDP founder N.T. Rama Rao, this year’s Mahanadu is set to adopt around 20 resolutions addressing key issues affecting Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The conclave also aims to outline the party's political strategy and roadmap for future elections, as the TDP seeks to capitalize on its substantial membership base across multiple states.
