146 new legislators, one crash course: Tamil Nadu’s TVK govt prepares rookie MLAs for assembly debut

New MLAs in Tamil Nadu Get Essential Training for Assembly Role

The Tamil Nadu government is ensuring that its 146 newly elected MLAs are well-prepared for their roles, avoiding potential pitfalls of inexperience. Government officials have provided practical training on crucial parliamentary procedures, including how to effectively engage with ministers, submit motion notices, and participate in legislative debates. K. Sindu, a first-time MLA from Gudiyattam, noted,

“By understanding administrative workflows, we will be better positioned to execute government programmes, direct the people to the right authorities, seek accountability, propose informed interventions and bridge the gap between policy decisions and their implementation on the ground.”

Training sessions also covered the executive side of governance, focusing on the workings of various government departments. Presentations by departmental officials outlined key schemes and the responsibilities of each agency. A Chennai MLA, who preferred to remain anonymous, remarked,

“We need to be aware of the government machinery to ensure that people dependent on these schemes are benefited the right way.”
This knowledge equips them to guide constituents seeking assistance.

Throughout the training, MLAs learned about the Rules of Procedure governing the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. Participation was strong among TVK MLAs and allied parties like Congress and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, though opposition members chose not to attend. Gopison, another TVK MLA, shared that Chief Minister Vijay sought feedback from the MLAs and actively monitored the training's effectiveness, emphasizing the importance of understanding government operations.

Conduct and decorum in the assembly were major focal points of the training. Sindu explained,

“We were taught how to raise questions and how to respond to issues. We also need to coordinate with other leaders and local body officials as we carry out our duties.”
The Speaker encouraged MLAs to learn from historical leaders by studying their speeches, reinforcing the idea that knowledgeable legislators enhance democracy and better serve their communities.
